For a lot of people, pets are like furry children. If that describes you, then you know the importance of your pet having its own living space. Whether that space is a kennel or a whole room, your pet deserves a decorated environment.

Cats and dogs, which are two of the most popular pets, have different degrees of colorblindness. They don’t perceive colors the same way as humans. Therefore, you should pick a color scheme that is pleasing to you! You will be spending time playing with your pet, and you’ll be affected by the color more than your pet.

Make sure that your pet’s space is nice and roomy. When you are looking at apartments for rent, be sure to ask about room measurements as these can help you evaluate whether or not there is enough room for your pet’s food, toys, and sleep area.

As you begin decorating your pet’s room, try to make sure that most of the decorations have a purpose. Decorative shelves can be used to hold pet treats, a leash, or pictures. A beautiful over sized pillow can also serve as your pet’s bed. A nice selection of pet toys can double as decorations; scatter them around the room to keep your pet active and entertained. You will find a wide array of options, stores and ideas in ebayclassifieds to make your pet’s living environment as cozy as can be.

For the best decorative effect, try to keep the center of the room clear of clutter and toys. Not only does this look more aesthetically pleasing, it is better for your pet! Your pet can have more space to run around and play.

Some dogs are cool, some are not. “Bully breeds,” are breeds that have been known to bite people and display aggressive behavior. There has been controversy over bully breeds since the beginning of domestication; they’re husky, strong dogs with large block heads that look scary.

Looking scary has a lot to do with the facts of biting dogs; nobody is afraid of a Daschund but would cringe at the sight of a Pit Bull coming toward them, even when displaying friendly body language. The truth is, that Daschund is far more aggressive than the Pit Bull ever thought to be.

Big Dogs do More Damage

If someone had to choose a breed to be afraid of they’d be best off choosing a small breed of dog because, as people exposed to many dog breeds will attest, it’s the small dogs that have the worst attitudes. They have no fear and see no size difference between dogs or people and themselves.

It’s true, the Daschund leads the pack when it comes to the list of aggressive canines, according to the Journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science. The study showed that one out of five Daschunds have bitten strangers, one out of five have attacked other dogs, and one in twelve have bitten their owners.

Numbers two and three are Chihuahuas and Jack Russells, respectively. The study was done by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, among 6,000 people that owned one of 33 different breeds studied. Pit Bulls and Rottweilers scored four and five; which dogs scored the lowest? Greyhounds, Siberian Huskies, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Basset Hounds.

There are so many choices about what to study in college. It seems everyone would like to be a doctor or lawyer, maybe even a dentist. What about becoming a veterinarian? If you like animals or even just the medical field, you might look at this under-filled job area.

Demand is Growing

There is a wide variety of kinds of veterinary medicine in which you could practice after school. The demand seems to be growing at 35 percent for veterinarians but the supply isn’t keeping up. Job areas such as large animal practice are wide open to those who want to pursue them. It isn’t for everyone but it is very rewarding. For example, equine (horse) vets make very good money!

How to Become a Vet

There are certain classes you should take even as early as high school to become competitive for vet school. If you consider becoming a veterinarian, you can talk to your advisor to find out about the process, but many don’t really know what is required. It is best to speak with an actual veterinarian or even better, vet schools. Agricultural schools are pretty in-the-know about requirements as well.

Most Popular Fields of Vet Science

Currently, many students in vet medicine are women. They typically want to work with household pets for their practice because the schedule is a little more predictable and the work is not as physical as large animal practices. Pay scales often depend on the geographical areas as well as clientele of the practice. People love their pets and they pay to keep them alive and healthy!

Keeping your canine companion comfortable is important to all dog owners, and a good way to ensure they get the exercise they need is to live near a dog park. Finding a suitable home near a dog park can be trying, but there are plenty of areas that offer dog parks to suit canine owners.

Check in with your local property management HOA. They can assist you with finding a house near the area you wish. When searching for that perfect home, it’s a good idea to test the walk to the local dog park. Most homes near a park are usually within walking distance. However, if the walk is too long for you and your dog, hopping in a vehicle may be the remedy for this predicament.

Also, you may want to look into a duplex or apartment complex that is near a dog park. These generally have a higher chance of being near the desired area. This may be an option if renting is something you’re more inclined to do before purchasing a house in the area. Be sure that the rental property does allow pets.

Check with the landlord about the deposit amount for pets. Also, some properties don’t allow specific breeds of large dogs. Make sure you look into this thoroughly before moving. Depending on the area you live in, you can typically find more than one canine-oriented park. Check around for the park you think will work with not only your companion, but also your budget.

The notion of home isn’t a purely human one. It instead belongs to your pet — with you wanting to offer her all of the comforts you demand for yourself, the luxuries. You can find almost anything you need or want for your pet online. Sites like ebayclassifieds are heaven on earth for affordable goods, especially for pets.

It’s important then to create a room that belongs to her, letting the space reflect her needs:

Color Choices

Walls aren’t meant to be bare: endless spans of white and beige. They instead, you’re certain, should be painted; and your pet’s room will have the same advantage of color as the rest of your home. The choice you make, however, requires consideration (specifically of emotions). Red, orange and similar shades are stimulating. Blues, greens and browns, however, are known to subdue. Understand the intentions of the space before painting.

Bedding Decisions

A spare pillow won’t suffice; a collection of sheets is gauche. Your pet deserves a bed worthy of her needs, and you intend to offer it. That’s — thankfully — an easy thing. There are a variety of bedding types to discover: from traditional loungers to memory foam pads to even cat condos. You can find the right size (and style) for your animal.

Fabric Selections

The purpose of a pet room is to offer sanctuary for your four-legged family member. That requires more than good intentions, however. It instead demands wisdom. Choosing fabric (whether window treatments, blankets or rugs) should be a careful process. Be certain you select cloths that can be cleaned easily; avoid pastel colors or prints as these can’t disguise dirt; and consider synthetic fibers to ensure durability against potential teeth marks.

Use these suggestions to create the perfect space for your pet.

Caring for your pet’s dental needs can sound like a challenge. But with a few easy tools you can get those incisors, molars and canines healthy and fresh. Regular brushing not only encourages fresh breath, it prevents early tooth decay and dental disease.

The first tool you need is a vet visit. If you don’t already have a vet, hopping on a site like Canada 411 can steer you in the right direction. An initial deep professional cleaning provides you with a good base to work from. Talk candidly with your vet about concerns or questions you might have regarding proper dental care at home. Your vet can recommend the proper instruments to best fit your pet’s needs.

Toothbrushes and toothpaste come next. Once your vet has guided you towards the right toothpaste and brushing apparatus, begin by placing a dollop on your finger, allowing your pet to check it out. These tools are now part of your regular grooming supplies. An enzymatic toothpaste provides additional food and plaque particle busting power. A variety of flavors, such as seafood, beef and vanilla, are available to temp your pet’s taste buds.

Thirdly, a gentle demeanor will help your pet feel at ease. Pets are creatures of habit. Anything that alters their routine can cause stress. By approaching brush time with care and a fun attitude, it can be less agitating to Kitty or Spot.

The last tool you’ll need is patience. It can be challenging to get your pet to accommodate a brushing routine, but your efforts will pay off. Throw in a post-brushing treat and a cuddle. Praise them for a job well done.

As many folks will tell you, there are two kinds of people in this world: Dog people or cat people. One thing all of those folks have in common is their pets need to visit their doctors on the same schedule as their human owners. A wellness exam is encouraged to be scheduled every six months with a veterinarian. And just like humans, pets are living longer thanks to advances in medicine. However, there is no escaping the fact that our pets age quicker than us. This means we need to stay on top of their healthcare with a bit more diligence.

At a typical pet wellness exam, the veterinarian will first make sure that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. This is especially important with dogs. Because they are such social animals, dogs literally get their noses into all kinds of places. This can lead to all kinds of health concerns. Having the proper vaccinations can prevent troubles after a visit to the dog park.

A vet will be checking weight, heart and lungs on your pet. You might also want to bring them a special “sample” of your pet’s poo. This is the best way to check for parasites. Depending on the age of your pet, your doctor might suggest a blood draw to screen for other issues. It’s all part of a healthy maintenance plan.

Just like your annual physical, your pet’s doctor will also be examining your pet’s eyes, ears and stomach. One other item to stay on top of is your pet’s dental hygiene. Occasional bad breath issues aside, our pets don’t have the luxury of twice daily teeth brushing. Scheduling a deep cleaning is the best course of action to prevent dental disease. There are many methods to choose from including cleanings that don’t require anesthesia. For all our pets give us, twice yearly visits to the doctor aren’t asking for much!

When guests come into your home and you have an aquarium set up, they love to walk over and watch the fish for a few seconds. Children will stand in front of the tank and watch the fish for a long time. They love the free motion of fish as they swim around. Watching fish is very relaxing and quite enjoyable for most people.

Setting up your aquarium is actually quite easy and relatively inexpensive. Decide which size tank you can afford and will fit in the space you have chosen. It needs to be near a power source and out of drafts and direct sunlight. Placing two or three inches of aquarium gravel on the bottom of the tank allows the little microorganisms to live. They are needed to keep your tank and your fish healthy.

You can decorate your tank with driftwood, rocks and ornaments purchased from your pet store. Live or plastic plants add beauty to your tank. Make sure to leave a large area in the middle of your tank for the fish to swim. They need to swim and race around as they love the ability to frolic and dart in and around your decorations. They also need to hide when they want their privacy. Many fish kept in the middle of rooms that can be viewed from all sides, do not live as long.

Using a good filtration system and tank heater will also allow your fish to remain comfortable and healthy. Keeping a hood on your tank will prevent them from jumping out and keep evaporation to a minimum.

Now you are ready to purchase your fish and start to enjoy them as they dart around in their paradise. You can now experience the enjoyment of relaxing and watching your own fish as they swim about your home aquarium knowing they are comfortable and safe.

The road to recovery for an addict is never an easy one. Trying to transform the mindset of an addict who gives into their addiction is not always easy. Plenty of addicts must take the time and care to go through lengthy rehabilitation programs to learn how to live in a world with temptation, and they must learn how to create ways to enforce good behavior and have good judgment.

For some addicts, this may involve the assistance of a pet. It seems odd that pets would be so important for an addict to get back on track, but the truth is there is a lot about pet care that a person who is struggling with addiction can learn about themselves and about the path to recovery.

Having a pet is a big responsibility, and one that should not be taken lightly. It’s caring for another life, and the decisions that you make that can impact that life greatly. This is a very important tool in the recovery process, and what it ultimately does is force the addict to take responsibility for something and put someone else before themselves. It also helps them to develop a nurturing relationship built on unconditional friendship and love. Many addicts have spent a long time being selfish about their own needs, and having a pet is great way for them to be both unselfish and accountable for their behavior. This also gives them the opportunity to learn about independence and self reliance.

There are many rehab facilities, such as Rehab-International.org, that actually encourage patients to bring their pets with them as a way to jump start the healing process. It’s also a great way to make the addict feel comfortable and cared for during treatment. With the love and companion of a pet, the enormous bridge to recovery is easier to cross.

Cats have been living with humans for 4,000 to 8,000 years. We love their graceful movement, their beautiful looks and the way they love us back. When you decide to get a cat one of the best places to get one is your local animal shelter.

Feeding your cat is easy. It is best to feed them and then remove the food after 30 minutes. Baby kittens, 6 to 12 weeks, will need to be fed four times each day, while kittens from three to six months should be fed three times each day. Adult cats can be fed one to three meals each day. Better quality kitten or cat food is recommended over generic brands as they tend to have better ingredients and are better for you animal. Keep fresh water available at all times. Clean the food and water dishes each day.

Treats are fun to give and your cat loves them. Nonetheless use them sparingly. Most treats have lots of sugar and fat and are not healthy to eat. Not all cats will eat fruits or vegetables but most love a few and will enjoy this natural treat.

Although cats keep themselves relatively clean and almost never need a bath, brushing or combing your cat can be a great bonding time for both of you. Cats usually like the attention and brushing frequently will keep their coat clean, reduce shedding and dramatically reduce hairballs.

Give your cat their own clean and dry place to sleep and rest. Line their bed with a warm, soft blanket or towel. Clean their bedding weekly as cats will stop using their bed if it stinks.

Cats really are an indoor animal. They do best if not allowed outside. They can avoid all the outdoor issues: ticks, parasites, fighting with other cats or dogs, cars and just getting lost.

Love your cat and they will love you back. It is not an accident that cats and humans have been together for so many thousands of years. Treat him well and he will live long and you will both prosper from the relationship.

Your pet deserves good care and that care does not have to be expensive. Baking soda is relatively cheap and does an excellent job in many different ways when you want to care for your pet.

As baking soda is nontoxic you do not have to worry about hurting your animal. Baking soda absorbs many different odors, which makes your life much more pleasant. After a pet accident you can scrub the area with club soda and let it dry. Then take some baking soda and sprinkle the area you cleaned and let it stand for about 15 minutes. After you vacuum the residue you should have a clean smelling area.

Dental hygiene is just as important for your dog or cat as it is for you. Dip a damp, soft toothbrush into baking soda and brush gently. His breath will smell better and he will also appreciate the clean feel on his teeth, just as you do.

Another dental hygiene trick is to take a solution of ½ teaspoon salt, one teaspoon baking soda and 1 cup warm water and then rinse your pet’s mouth.

Skunk smell is one foul smelling stench. When Fido or Fifi have had a run in with our stripped friend, no one wants to be around them for a week. To help with the stench you can wash your animal in a bath with ¼ cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon liquid soap and 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide. Throw away the extra solution and let your pet dry. This should allow you to snuggle with your pet again.

Help your pets sleeping area to smell good. Sprinkle baking soda, let sit fifteen minutes and vacuum.

Baking soda can go a long way in making you and your pet smell good. Your friends will also appreciate coming into your clean smelling home.

Humans and animals belong together. We love our pets and they love us. But this relationship goes beyond just having affection for each other. We are symbiotic. We help each other physically, emotionally, and socially.

Purdue University’s Center for the Human-Animal Bond has been conducting studies since 1982. Some of their findings are quite fascinating.

When people are in frequent contact with animals they experience reduced anxiety, a decrease in blood pressure and they just feel better.

As children interact and observe the behavior of their pets they often become more nurturing. Studies are still on-going but children with pets are possibly better parents when they start having their own children.

When animals have been introduced into nursing homes, hospices, prisons and even hospitals they have found a distinct therapeutic correlation. Animals sooth the patients and bring a calm to frazzled nerves or to the injured psyche. Recovery is faster or declines are slowed. Quality of life for the patient tends to be much better.

When people are around pets those people tend to be happier. They stop and enjoy the love that flows back to them from the animal. Both people and animals are social beings. We thrive best when we have interaction between other beings. Whether that interaction is between two people or a person and a pet does not appear to make a difference.

There have been extensive studies about the benefits of humans having pets. We know we are better off. Studies are just beginning to determine how the human interaction is beneficial to the animals. These studies are looking at not just domesticated animals but they are also looking at how wildlife and humans interact. These studies will be interesting to see how different species will show benefits or detriment from their human interactions.

Man and animals are on this earth together and we are finding that we are truly symbiotic. Mankind is happier when they interact with animals and animals are happier and live longer when they live with and interact with mankind.

Failing to train your dog or to teach him or her right and wrong can have serious consequences. If you’ve ever had the wood finish scratched on your poker tables due to this problem, it becomes clear that training should take place. Here are some tips to help with the training process on your dog.

You should seriously consider ways to learn training techniques for your dog. Many popular pet stores have pet training classes that could be a valuable way to learn these things. Not only will it give you a strong foundation in techniques, but it can help you become a better master of your pet – in order to teach him or her what is right and wrong.

As you learn techniques to help your dog with his or her mental and emotional health, be sure to stay firm in your practices. It is never a good idea to “give in” and break the consistency of a certain training method, unless the technique itself calls for such measures.

Don’t resort to other measures. While it can be easy to imagine the consequences of resorting to less effective measures, it can happen to anyone in the heat of the moment. As difficult and tough it may be, don’t ignore your methods of training a dog. It is unfortunate to see owners who start with a method to be chasing their dog moments later.

Stick to commands that can help your dog remain obedient. Once your dog learns to sit, lay down, and come, he or she will hopefully be better at listening to you. You can extend this to areas of the house in which your dog will be aware of, such as your nice poker tables, certainly.

Take some time to address options to learn how to train your dog – it will be worth it in the end.

Breeding your pets can be very easy. If a male and a female are around each other they, most likely, will breed. It really is that simple. However, this laissez-faire attitude also causes thousands of animals to be put to sleep every day at humane societies all over the world.

If you decide that you do not want to responsibly breed your pets then please have them spayed or neutered and thereby save their offspring from living horrible lives or being killed early either humanly or otherwise.

Responsible breeding has four basic points.

First, acquire your animal from an established and reliable breeding source. Raise genetically healthy animals with good bloodlines. This will allow life to animals that are free from common genetic defects and will allow their young to also be healthy and happy.

Second, as you breed animals, do so primarily for healthy, even tempered and intelligent pets. You can breed for color and markings but these should be secondary to the health and happiness of the animal.

Third, a responsible breeder will only breed as many animals as they can handle themselves or they can find homes for. Often they will talk to others and breed only when they know they have a home ready for the animals. The adoptive family can then watch the mother progress through her pregnancy and birth. They can then enjoy the babies knowing they were wanted from the beginning.

Fourth, if the adoptive family does not work out the responsible breeder will take back the, now unwanted, animals. Recognize that not everyone can have pets in the home. When the adoptive family realizes that their children or mom or dad are allergic to the animal, the poor innocent animal must leave the home. This is hard on all involved but knowing that the animal went to a good home lets the children know the pet was lovingly moved to a new home.

And fifth, they will also make sure that the adoptive family is taught how to responsibly breed or ensure that the animal is properly spayed or neutered.

Pets are definitely a part of the modern family! When you choose a new outfit or a costume for a special occasion, don’t let your best friend feel left out. These days, pets of all types and sizes can be just as fashionable as their owner. If you’re interested in creating a wardrobe for your pet, try one of these ideas for pet costumes:

Dress for the Occasion

If you’re dressing up for a wedding or a party, select a tuxedo or lacy dress for your little friend. While this usually works best for dogs, cats and other pets have been seen fashionably attired at various venues. Your pet’s clothing doesn’t have to be formal! Dress them up rocker-style or as a cute little ladybug depending on the occasion. Going to the beach? Try a floppy hat or some cool sunglasses.

Holiday Outfits

One of the best opportunities to try out a few pet costumes is a major holiday. For Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, even normal retail stores stock a few pet-friendly costumes. Of course, you can order more elaborate costumes from online sites. Whether your pooch likes to look like a devil, a turkey, or Santa Claus, he’ll enjoy the holiday much more when everyone is fussing over how cute he is! Don’t forget to take a few pictures; pet postcards make great greeting cards for these holidays. They’re much more interesting than a standard item.

Everyday Style

Once you and your pet get into this new trend of costuming together, you don’t have to wait for a special day to try on a few new duds. Pet clothing is available in everything from raincoats to pajamas! You can even buy a pair or two of doggie shoes for your furry little friend.

Don’t leave your pup out in the cold on your next shopping spree! Dress your pet up to attract the attention he or she craves!

Animals are fun to have in the home. They give you lots of love and attention, even cats (they just do it in their own way). Just like you your pet loves to eat. Eating is a natural part of all of our lives and we need to feed our animals correctly just as we need to eat healthy.

You will want to check with your veterinarian for their suggestions. Each animal is different, size, temperament, breed, our pets have far more variety than we humans. Your vet will be able to better understand these differences for your pet than the instructions on the side of the pet food package.

Measuring the food each time as you feed your animal will also allow uniform feeding. Especially if two or more of you are feeding them. A bowl full of food can mean two different things to two different people. Different bowls can also hold radically different amounts of food in them. Using a measuring cup will make all these differences irrelevant.

All animals should have normal mealtimes. You can ensure that they are getting the food that they need and not over eat. Often animals will over eat when they are bored. This will result in fat cats, dogs, hamsters, etc. They will live longer and be happier if they are at the proper weight.

Table scraps are horrible for pets to eat. They often love to eat what you are eating but your nutritional needs are different. Table fed animals are often fatter and less perky than animals that are following a diet built for them.

As you work with your animal and want to reward them, remember that there are several ways to reward their good behavior. Treats work well but should not be their only reward. Giving them love and attention goes a lot further than just a treat. They love to spend time with you, which is a great reward in and of itself.

Show your pets that you love them by properly feeding and caring for them. They will reward you affectionately for many years.

Dogs are the most popular pets in the world and are parts of a large percentage of households around the world. The bond between man and dog is a unique one in the whole of the animal kingdom. Dogs offer unwavering loyalty to their human masters and the owners also tend to get extremely attached to their dogs. Being one of the first domesticated animals, humans and dogs have been together for millennia. From the time man started settling down and building civilizations, dogs have been by their side. This trend continues even now when many of the uses of dogs no longer exist. Mankind is no longer as dependant on dogs as before but still their popularity never wanes.

There are many types of dogs people keep as pets nowadays, from small Pugs to huge Saint Bernard. However special care is needed while keeping dogs which have been declared as aggressive breeds. Rottweiler, German shepherd, Doberman all have been declared as aggressive breeds of dogs. These dogs have powerful jaws and great bite power. Also they tend to be aggressive towards strangers as they are usually territorial and extremely protective of their masters.

Still, many choose to keep these breeds as pets. These breeds are seldom dangerous to its owners. The problem usually comes when the dog comes in contact with outsiders by mistake. A guest who plucks a rose from your garden may be subjected to the fury of your dog which tends to take guard duty very seriously. Hence the first thing to understand is that even though your dog is adorable and cuddly to you, it will be completely different to an outsider. Hence you should try not to bring the dog in contact with outsiders unless it has been trained to be social since it was a puppy.

The domestication of the dog is supposed to be one of the turning points in human civilization. Since that time mankind has domesticated many animals for various purposes. For food, milk, transportation, etc. However as society progressed and technology developed, many of the once major uses of domesticated animals such as transportation and security have lost its significance. Yet people started keeping animals for no real reason other than the joy of their companionship. That is how the whole concept of keeping pets started. In modern times, even though dogs are still used as guard dogs and by the police force and all, the main use of a dog is now as a pet. So what is it about keeping a pet that is so great?

Science has shown that keeping a pet is not simply an idle pastime and that it has actual health benefits to the owner. The simple act of raising an animal and caring for it provides a lot of joy to the person doing it. Even though companionship is something that you can also get from friends and family, only a pet can give the kind of self less love which does not have the usual drama of human relationships. An animal like a dog is loyal to the point of devotion and never wavers in its love for its master. This sort of assured companionship is something only animals can provide. Dogs especially have been noted for their faithfulness. The term ‘man’s best friend’ is not used idly. There have been instances of dogs showing immense faithfulness to their owners and even rescuing them at times of need. Amid the pressures of modern life, pets can be great stress relievers. The health benefits of keeping pets have been particularly noted for ailing patients and senior citizens.

There are many animals which could form a pet in a household. They could be common pets such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and uncommon pets such as snakes, turtles and even lions and tigers. Of all the above animals, dogs and cats are the most of common of all pets, which are widely reared and grown in households. Dogs by nature are docile and very obedient.

They are extremely faithful to their owners and very rarely do they disagree or disobey their masters. However, there are instances when dogs have known to earn the notorious name of aggressive animals. Before branding them as villains and giving them adjectives, it would be better if we look inwards and try to find out if there is a problem in the way we tackle their health problems and general care which makes them turn aggressive.

Dogs are equipped with powerful jaws and teeth which can be highly dangerous and can cause serious damage when they turn aggressive. But they do not become aggressive very often unless they are provoked. What provokes them is something which as owners and masters we should find out. When a dog is in the breeding season quite often they tend to be aggressive. Again some species of dogs are by nature aggressive.

Some food habits may also provide them to become aggressive. Some dogs are territorial in nature and they exhibit signs of aggression to protect their territory. Others need company of their own kind and when they are denied this basic right, they express their displeasure by turning it on their masters. The first signs of a rabid infection in a dog is unwarranted aggression and this vital sign should not be ignored if the pet has to survive and also if the people surrounding it are to remain safe. So, aggression is not a natural reason for dogs and hence the main reason should be identified and remedied.

Pets are one of the best companions of human beings because they agree with whatever we say. They are easy to train, easy to manage and above all they return love with love most of the times. However, even for pets there are some general do and don’t which we should adhere to if we are to keep them away from health problems and other related complications.

However pet rearing and pet breeding could be a full time job and any laxity of carelessness could spell disaster for the pet. Grooming the pet, training them, taking them on regular walks, doing rounds to the veterinary doctors regularly and above all showering love and affection on them are some of the tasks which must be done without tiredness or fatigue. Coming to some general things that must be taken care of, giving the pet the right kind of food is very important.

Some species of pets demand special food which must be understood and acted upon. Pets also need vitamin supplements, tonics, and other medicines which must be well stocked up to avoid rushing for the same in case of need. There are other statutory requirements such as licenses for the pets which should be in place and should be validated time and again. ID tag is another thing which must also be in place.

Pets are also normal living things and their need for company should be understood and respected or else we could run the risk of having aggressive breeds in our house which actually they are not. Pets tend to fall sick often if they are not taken proper care and if they fall sick it is important that they are taken to a doctor for treatment. In places where there are wild fluctuations in climate, the living conditions of pets also need to be understood and they should be provided with the right kind of shelter and clothing.

Owning a pet is just the beginning. It calls for a lot of patience, hard work, love and care to keep the pet in good condition. There are a lot of general care rules and regulations that need to be gone through to keep pets in good health, especially when they are in the breeding season. It would do a great service to the pet owner and also the pet if people are aware of some common symptoms which point towards some health problems in pets.

These symptoms could include abnormal discharges, not eating properly or eating which is much reduced, behavior which is abnormal and at times very aggressive even though they are not aggressive breeds. Immediately on the notice of such symptoms it would be advisable to take the pet to a good veterinarian and put it on some treatment regimen after diagnosing the cause of their abnormal behavior or other manifestations.

Some species of pets fall sick and develop health challenges if the environment and surroundings are not to their liking. For example, some pets which thrive in the most severe winters are definitely bound to fall sick if they are reared as pets in tropical climates. So a pet should be grown in a climate where it is comfortable. Pets need constant dental care. Dogs are very prone to dental illnesses. Constant care and vigil should be exercised to remove excess buildup of tartar to prevent diseases such as gingivitis, etc., from creeping in.

Some common symptoms of dental illness are swelling of the gums, bleeding and foul smell. Such symptoms should not be ignored. Feeding habits could also cause dental problems which should be kept in mind. Chocolate, candies and sweet items are excellent recipes for the pets’ dental health and should be kept out. Hence keeping a pet in good health is easier said than done.

Pet feeding indeed is an interesting and yet times intriguing subject. Very often, the eating habits of pets get intertwined with the eating habits of the family where the pet lives and grows. While this is convenient for the family in general, it has to be found out whether it works for the pet. Different species of pets have different food habits and as a general care regimen we should understand the eating habits of different pets and feed them accordingly.

The basic rule is that pets like dogs and cats are not born to eat vegetarian food and feeding them on these types of food is bound to weaken the animal and at times may also cause death. There are certain nutrients which are best absorbed by pets only if the food intake is non-vegetarian. Continuing with a vegetarian food diet is bound to create health problems that might turn serious. Additionally, there is no point feeding pets with items which might be delicious and sought after by human beings.

There are many households which feed dogs and cats on chocolates. Let it be understood clearly that actions are bound to be fatal for the animal in the future. Feeding habits also need to change when the pets are in the breeding season. The diet should take into account the special needs of the animal considering the fact that a few more new lives are being carried by it. When the pet is carrying, it is better to stagger the feeding time and avoid overfeeding which might create problems.

There are some aggressive breeds of pets that really turn nasty when they are not fed at the right time. Here the pet owner needs to be careful and avoid situations that make the pet become aggressive and go out of control.

If you have a curious, adventurous pet, then there is a chance that it might accidentally get lost while exploring the neighborhood. Some dogs and cats get so involved in their explorations, that they forget how to get home. When this happens, it is a good idea to hang flyers in your neighborhood.

Follow these tips to ensure that you make the most effective flyers to help bring your missing pet home:

Grab Attention With Your Flyer

Your flyer should grab the attention of every person who passes by it. This will make more people aware of your missing pet. You don’t need great design skills to make an attention-grabbing flyer. Just use brightly colored paper. Yellow and orange, for instance, will stand out on any surface.

Include Pertinent Information on Your Flyer

In addition to making sure that your flyer grabs the attention of passersby, you have to include information that will actually help bring your pet home. Your flyer should include information such as:

When your pet went missing

Where your pet was last seen

Your pet’s breed, color, size and distinguishing features

Your pet’s name

Your phone number

A picture of your pet, if you have one

If you plan to offer a reward, then you should list this information on your flyer, too. Doing so will encourage more people to look for your missing pet.

Finding Lost Pets

Many pets are returned to their homes every year simply because their owners made effective flyers that provided other people with the right information. Be sure to hang them where people in your community will see them. In addition to light poles, try asking businesses whether you can hang your flyer on their windows or message boards.

Attention grabbing, informative flyers are a key element in bringing your furry family member home. Follow these tips and you’re sure to find your lost pet.

Pets are one the most exciting and adorable companions of many people around the world. However having a pet in the house is just not enough and there are many things which need to be taken care of particularly with regard to their feeding, breeding and other factors. Pets like human beings need love and extra care. So before anyone decides to go in for a pet he should first make up his mind clearly whether he is really ready to handle the pet or whether his household and surroundings will support him having a pet.

We must remember that we need to set apart considerable period of our time for bringing up and maintaining the pet and other species of animals. For example if you are planning to rear a dog it should be understood that dogs by nature are animals which like to live in packs.

There are also other health problems that need to be addressed when dealing with pets. Pets are prone to falling sick which could turn fatal if it is not nipped in the bud. They need to be washed, bathed and have to be taken to the veterinary doctor once a while for a complete checkup. There are also other issues related to general care of pets such as having the right kind of pet license and also taking care of them when you are out of the house.

Other issues like breeding also need to be tackled. Pets hate loneliness and this point has to be addressed when you have a pet in the house. There are also special cares which need to be taken with some aggressive breeds of pets. The moot point is we should be as understanding and caring with pets as we are with our own children. Generally as a rule, pets are great companions provided we reflect the companionship in action.

You maybe an animal lover and have been thinking of adopting or buying a pet for a long time. You are fully aware of the responsibilities and the advantages of having a pet. However since it is not like any other inanimate object, having a pet requires a lot of deliberations and thinking. A number of things should be kept in mind while purchasing the right kind of pet for yourself and the entire household.

The first thing which should be considered while making the decision is the real reason behind having a pet. It is to be remembered that keeping a pet is not easy affair and requires a lot of time, energy and money. Hence if you just want to have a pet because your best purchased one, then there are high chances of you losing interest in your pet after sometime. If you really love a cat or a dog and want to share a long time special bonding with him, then you can opt for one.

The second that should be figured out is how responsible you are to take proper care of your pet. It may demand a lot of your time and energy. The initial phase is not the cause of concern as you will go out of your way to make your pet feel special. However you have to remember it is not meant for a couple for months but for a very long period of time. You should gauge your routine, find out how much time you can actually devote on him and then make the decision of buying one.

If you have siblings another reason of worry is choosing the right pet. You may be in love with a Labrador, but your sister wants cat whereas your younger brother wants a rabbit. In such circumstances the entire family should sit together and decide on the one which best suits the entire family.

Having a pet is a wonderful and fun affair. The presence of a pet can bring about a lot of changes in the entire household. The sense of bonding, love, friendship and togetherness will find entirely new meanings. However having a pet is not a meager task, it is in fact a huge responsibility.

There are a lot of responsibilities which need to be taken care of while you keep a pet at your place. Right from getting the right kind of pet to looking after its daily chores, everything needs a lot of attention and detailing. The most important thing which a pet wants from you is love. They shower you with unflinching love and affection and demand the same from you. It is the least you can do to return their favor of showering you with love. That is the constant thing that they seek from you.

You may suddenly change or grow or become extremely busy with your love, but your pet’s need for your love will remain the same. So it is important for you to take sometime out everyday to play with your pet and make him feel special. A few minutes of being with your pet everyday can create a world of difference for him. When you are planning to have a pet always keep in mind that keeping them needs a lot of time, energy and money. You have to devote quite sometime everyday to play with him and look after his other needs. The money involved in buying a pet does not end there, it is in fact just the beginning.

A lot of money will be needed for his food, healthcare and other supplies like a litter box, cage, and bed. Then there can be emergencies or any other unexpected happenings like operations which also requires a lot of money. You should also have enough energy to deal with its demands after a hard days work.

Having a pet at your home adds charm to the ambience of the home. It is one of the most rewarding experiences one can enjoy. The unconditional love that a pet bestows on you brings enough joy and togetherness. The special bonding which a pet enjoys with a kid notwithstanding, there are several other reasons which makes keeping a pet a memorable experience.

The first and the foremost thing which a pet brings to your life is finding a loyal and lovable friend in them. If you stay at an isolated place or have just shifted your base and do not have anyone to call a friend, then having a pet fills the void in your life. A pet can act as your best friend in times of need. Secondly you can yourself see a lot of changes in your mentality for the better. A pet teaches you how to take care of others properly.

It has been seen that even a hard soul gets transformed into a soft person in the company of a pet. It is their love that teaches you the true meaning of love and affection and how to spread it across. Along with love, how to take responsibilities is also something which a pet can teach you. Having a pet is not only about having fun and company. It carries along with itself a lot of responsibilities which should be taken into consideration.

Happiness is something which a pet distributes in your life in enormous quantities. Having a pet can bring happiness and joy to your life in such an extent which no other thing can provide you. They also act as a great cure for your loneliness and depression. Thus keeping a pet creates a sense of bonding and togetherness which is hard to find anywhere else.

Having a pet at your home brings enormous happiness to the entire household. Pets shower you with unconditional love which is hard to find in today’s world. They create an ecstatic atmosphere and add to the charm of the house. Due to the large number of benefits which keeping a pet provide, people have started keeping a dog, rabbit or other any other pet in large numbers.

The only concern when it comes to keeping pets it what to do if you are planning for a trip. If you are planning to go out for a few days, it becomes difficult to keep the pet alone at home. A trip by road is the best option if you want to take your pet along with you during a trip. However there are certain things which should be kept in mind while going for such a trip.

It is imperative to keep the pets safe on roads so that both you and the pet can enjoy a fabulous holiday. The first and the foremost thing that needs to be done is to carry the pet’s shots. They should be checked for expiry dates and they should also be carry proof. While driving down the road make sure that the pet, especially dogs does not stick their head out of the window.

If the bugs and dust flying in the air goes inside their eyes they can cause serious problems. Food and water are two other important things which should be carried in considerable quantities so that they don’t get over while you are still on road. Make sure you take frequent stops and also always remember to leash the pet when you halt for a break. At times when you stop for a break you won’t feel like taking the pet out of the car. This mistake should be avoided because pets tend to have less tolerance than human beings.

The trend of keeping pets has increased a lot in the last few years. Pets have been loved by a large number of people for a long time. However keeping a pet was something which was limited to mostly the rich and the famous or the people who can afford them. It used to be a status symbol once upon a time. With changing times, the idea of keeping a pet has also gone through massive changes. Now more and more people are open to the idea of keeping pets.

People are increasingly keeping pets due to a plethora of reasons. One such reason is the bond that a kid shares with a pet. It is said that kids share a special bonding with pets. The love that grows between a kid and a pet is something that is hard to find elsewhere. A pet seems to understand the needs and requirements of a kid. They shower all their love to a kid. Right from infancy to the growing up years people go through a wide range of emotions when it comes to taking care of pets.

It is generally seen that when there is a little kid at your home, the pet at your place does everything to make the kid feel comfortable and nice. The kid maybe too playful or too rude with them, but the pets still bestows their unconditional love. They tend to protect a kid from a lot of problems that they might face. They also act as great play partners. The kids enjoy playing with pets especially dogs. Their energy is something that is loved by kids. Hence, the kids never ever feel bored while in the company of pets. Every moment becomes wonderful and full of activities when there is a pet with you around.

Not every pet is good for cuddling. Try to get a grip on your goldfish and you’ll probably hurt it, and some large lizards and snakes are dangerous. But no matter what sort of pet you’re getting, they all have three undeniable needs you should be prepared to meet. Carefully evaluate whether you can meet each of the following needs for your prospective pet before you commit to a lifetime together:

Food: Mass-produced food like kibble or nutritional flakes is available for familiar pets like cats, dogs and fish. But mo”s general nutritional needs (can you handle feeding mice to that snake?) before you commit to a lifetime together.

Water: Of course pets need water to drink. But that’s not always as easy as setting out a bowl and refilling it every few days. You need to check your large pet’s water periodically to make sure it’s clean and fresh; some cats or dogs may inadvertently (or intentionally) tip their dishes over. If you have a toad, fish or other animal that spends some or all of its life in the water, you’re also responsible for making sure that the water it lives in is clean (and has the appropriate levels of minerals) on a continuing basis.

Space: Animals that live in a tank or cage, like reptiles, fish and birds, have clearly defined “personal” space. Some pets, like hamsters and rabbits, can be taken out of their cage for interaction. And others, like cats and dogs, spend most of their time outside kennels or doghouses. With these larger pets, make sure they have adequate room to roam. Giving your dog or cat that room while keeping it safely confined can be a challenge.

Guinea pigs are some of the most adorable creatures walking around on this planet. They were the first species of rodent than human kind domesticated, and they were originally used as food. But the fact that they are just so cute has led them to become popular pets among those who enjoy cuddling, and watching the pudgy little devils hang around and nibble on whatever unfortunate foliage may happen to get in their path. But one other down side to the fact that guinea pigs are rodents is the fact that they tend to breed a lot. In some unfortunate cases, pet stores may even sell pregnant female guinea pigs without even realizing it, completely innocently.

And in cases of pregnancy where you had nothing to do with it, the mother has a chance of having terrible, in some cases life threatening complications due to the fact that guinea pigs have a very narrow window of safe child bearing. If she is more than 5 months old and this is her first pregnancy, there is a chance that both mother and babies could die because of the positioning of her hip bones. Guinea pigs are very fragile creatures, after all. And pregnancy tends to really rock their bodies, and not in a Justin Timberlake kind of way.

In the case of attempting to breed your male and female guinea pigs, just don’t do it. Not only are there already tons and tons (and tons) of guineas out there who would love to be a part of a happy home. Not only are there abused piggies that are rescued from bad homes, and would really love to have some kindness shown to them in this life. The chances that you could end up producing guinea pigs that are inbred, or that suffer from other health problems caused by where they are born is just too high to be reasonable and safe. So please don’t breed them.

Are you looking for a dog that is active but small? Would you like to have a dog but have limited space in the yard? Do you want a dog that will be affectionate but yet entertain themselves around the house. Well, the Lhasa Apso may be the dog for you if you answered yes to these questions.

The Lhasa Apso is a small dog originally found in Tibet. The name Lhasa is also the name of the capital city of Tibet. The Lhasa is a short dog, longer than it is tall and has long hair. The are born with hair of many different colors from white to dark brown and sometimes spotted. Their ears hang down next to their face and their snout is fairly short. The long hair, often trimmed by the owners to make care easier, parts down the middle of their back and hangs to either side.

The dogs have a great temperament when given the right amount of attention. It is important when raising a dog that they are a dog and have a different social order than humans. Most dogs have a strong pack mentality and have to be treated as one of the pack and not the leader. This is true with the Lhasa Apso. Although a small dog, it is still important to take the dogs for walks. Although they can be happy playing in more confined spaces, such as remaining in the house much of the time they still need to get outside and go for a walk. Many Lhasa Apso love playing in the snow and out in the yard. Having a confined area of yard such as a fenced section will allow the dog to enjoy outdoor play without a leash. The Lhasa Apso is a great breed and if you are looking for a small dog this may be the one for you.

When anyone hears the term “pit bull”, people cringe. Very negative connotation. The truth is there’s no basis for it, because it’s formed out of past experiences and incidents and reports. Not many want a pit bull. They’re too “aggressive” or can “turn on their owners”. That’s what people hear daily. Again, despite the many stories regarding pit bulls, the underlying fact is it’s not at all true.

Pit Bull Terriers are not very violent. Actually, two of the most aggressive breeds are Akitas and German Shepherds. Why do you think Shepherds make good police dogs?

Traditionally, this breed of dog was trained to protect children, even better protect the family. And if you notice–provided your dog’s upbringing is good–your dog is very protective of many things. The terrier can focus on you, the children, the house, even food. It’s in their hard wiring. Anything that a pit bull sees that may be a threat to the household, it’ll go after like a Hound from Hell. Forget burglars, forget other nasty animals, all that stuff; an American Pit Bull Terrier can keep ANYONE safe. And they’re like giant muscles, too. Powerful, sleek, and rather intimidating.

It’s actually hard to see that a pit bull can be so ‘mothering’ and ‘protective’, but they really are. It has to be understood, once again, that it all depends on the training and treatment of this breed. Moreover, ANY breed, with the right care, can be wired for any kind of behavior. Just think about how deadly a pit bull can be if someone trained one to utilize that ability to protect as a form of violence. Yes, pit bulls are deadly. And all you would need to do is direct your dog to attack what you may deem as a threat. And it could be anything: kids, other animals, other people, maybe even yourself.

Yes, pit bulls get a bad rap. But here’s why: it’s not the dog, it’s the owner.

Adding a new member to your household is always exciting. When you’re expanding with the addition of a pet, however, you do have some planning to do before the little guy comes home with you. The first step in choosing your new dog is to decide what your needs are, and what your family can offer the dog. Do you have small children? Do you live in an apartment, or do you have a large yard? Do you have easy access to a dog park? Does anyone in your immediate family have known allergies? The answers to these questions will help you decide on the size and temperament of your new dog.

For those who live in cities or in smaller homes with limited yards, small to medium breeds are usually the best. Beagles and Cocker Spaniels are both known for mild temperament and willingness to please, making them slightly easier to train. You will want to choose your new dog from a reputable breeder to make sure you are not getting an over-bred dog, as those are typically high-strung and can have real personality problems.

If you live in the country or close to a dog park, and you’re willing to put in the exercise time, some large breeds are known to be great with older kids. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are two such breeds, but both will require considerable exercise to keep from being hyperactive. Other large breeds like the Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd and Rottweiler, while good and loyal dogs, are generally not advised for inexperienced owners or those with small children.

Before you choose, make sure to drop by your local animal shelter. You may very well find the perfect pet right there, already house-broken, spayed or neutered, and looking for someone to love. With the number of animals abandoned every day, it would be irresponsible not to consider them.

While pets are fun and adorable, they are a great deal of responsibility. Before choosing to become a pet owner, it is wise to consider if you are ready for the responsibility. In addition, you will want to give serious thought to the time you will have available to spend with your pet. This may determine the type of pet you may want to consider. You will also need to make sure you can provide food and medical care for your pet. Many new pet owners neglect to estimate the expense of veterinarian bills.

If you love dogs and are thinking about getting one, you will want to consider whether you have the necessary time to spend with your dog. Dogs are pack animals and love being with their pack and they need attention. Dogs also require training and this takes time and patience. This is where many new pet owners fail miserably. They end up with an unruly pet, which they cannot manage. Dogs need exercise and you should make sure you are going to be able to provide the necessary exercise to maintain a healthy pet.

If you do not have a great deal of free time available, you may want to consider a cat as a pet. Cats still require care and attention, however, most will gradually become more independent. You do have to provide enrichment activities but training will be minimal. You also do not have to worry about walking the cat and cats do very well as indoor pets. You will have to contend with keeping a litter box clean, preferably daily. Cats do not like to use a litter box that is not clean.

All pets require care and attention. Before deciding on a pet, you must make sure your are prepared for the responsibility and have the time for a pet in your busy lifestyle.

The decision to own a pet, ANY type of pet, is not trivial. It should be made with the appropriate gravity and degree of seriousness warranted by a decision to take responsibility for another life.

The first and most important question is ultimately ‘what sort of lifestyle do I have and how can a pet be incorporated into it?’ Notice here that the most important question is not ‘what sort of pet do I want?’ Some animals are very high maintenance while others are lower. If one’s lifestyle is such that a person is out traveling for business or otherwise occupied several days and nights a week, a higher maintenance pet such as a dog might not be the best choice.

After lifestyle is taken into account, living space must then be evaluated. A Great Dane is probably not the best for someone living in a one bedroom apartment on the sixth floor with no elevator. Guinea pigs, perhaps, might be a better fit. Certainly, the cavies won’t run up and give doggie kisses when returning home, but that might not be a bad thing if the dog is bounding over a coffee table and knocking over a lamp in order to do so.

After lifestyle and living space, environment is the next item to be thought of. Is the species of dog peaking your interest one of the loudest and most obnoxious types of barking dogs available? How will neighbors appreciate being disturbed by the seemingly never-ending barking, especially if lifestyle and living space were not also taken into consideration? Or does the landlord have a dander allergy that might be aggravated by your new cluster of long haired hamsters?

Finally, once all of these other things have been taken into account, the question can be asked ‘what kind of pet do I want?’

Answering these other questions first might make the answer to the last one a little easier.

Animals that are used for research, business or trade are not eligible. For example, dog breeders would not qualify for this tax benefit because they are making a profit from their animals.

The qualified pet care expenses include veterinarian care except for the cost incurred for acquiring the pet. Here are simple tax tips for deducting pet care expenses. You can deduct pet treats, pet medications, food, pet day care, overnight care, veterinarian visits, and veterinarian procedures. The maximum amount allowed for this pet care deduction is $3,500 per year. It’s wise to check with a tax specialist or the Internal Revenue Service if you have questions about whether a particular expense is covered.

Domesticated animals of any type and size are eligible for this tax savings. The HAPPY Act is very helpful for taxpayers as it provides added tax incentive to get a new pet or additional pets. It also encourages pet owners to provide good care for their animals on a regular basis. It is estimated that about 60 percent of Americans own a pet, making this act a real tax benefit for many taxpayers. Most importantly, taxpayers should note that this is an itemized deduction. Providing tax benefits for pet owners is an important step toward encouraging owners to take good care of their beloved furry friends.

When the cold winter weather hits, everyone is concerned with winterizing their homes and cars but seem to forget that Fido needs to be winterized too. Keep this checklist handy to keep your dog warm, safe, and healthy all winter long.

-	Schedule your dog for a checkup with the vet
Have the vet check to see if your dog has developed any health conditions that requires special monitoring and care. Conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune disease can compromise your dog’s ability to regulate body temperature. Dogs with arthritis will require specially prescribed medicines to help with joint pains exacerbated by cold temperatures.

- Keep the garage off limits
Dogs are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze which is a potent poison to their kidneys. Rat poisons, poisoned rodents, and even driveway salts can also be a lethal combination to your pet’s health and safety.

- Think warm and comfort
Older dogs, short haired dogs, small breeds, and those with medical conditions can benefit from a warm sweater and boots. Consider purchasing a heated pet bed to keep your dog snuggly warm throughout the cold winter months.

- Keep your dog dry and free of snow
Keep the fur around your dogs paws trimmed and use Vaseline on their paw pads and nose to keep them soft and crack free. All natural pet deicers can be sprayed on active dog’s paws and underbellies to allow them to run and play in the snow without building up and forming ice balls. After a walk or coming in from the outside, make sure that you wipe away snow, ice, and salt from your dog’s coat and paws to prevent skin irritations and frostbite.

Following these tips along with recommendations from your vet will insure your pet a safe environment from the harsh winter elements.

It is common knowledge that some dogs can be trained to assist with various disabilities and physical challenges such as blindness and paralysis. These types of training programs require specific dogs that have the ability to learn complicated tasks as well as extensive training to prepare them for the role. However, not everyone knows that even the average dog can volunteer as a therapy dog in many hospitals and nursing homes. That’s right, even Fifi or Buster can be a therapy dog because although the term “therapy” sounds like extensive training is involved, the reality is that the primary requirement to be a therapy dog is just the dog’s temperament and character.

The primary characteristics that all therapy dogs must portray are gentleness and love. These are the foundation for a good therapy dog. Additional attributes which are critical components of a therapy dog’s temperament is to be patient, to be calm in any situation, and to be welcoming of any touch–even one that may be uncertain. With these characteristics, almost any dog can be a therapy dog and as a result can volunteer to assist in nursing homes, schools, hospitals, retirement homes, and in programs for the physically challenged.

For many individuals that are restrained to a hospital room or nursing facility, these therapy dogs bring immeasurable joy and pleasure to days that are otherwise driven by tedious and repetitive routines. With the entrance of a therapy dog, they can lose themselves in the joy of playing with the animals, petting them, and watching their cute antics. It is an opportunity to forget about the environment that they are in, the bad health they are experiencing, and the challenges and pain of everyday life. For many of these individuals, therapy dogs may just be the best form of senior/elder care available.

Anyone who has a cat likely enjoys feeding their cat special treats and “people food.” It’s fun to give your cat a special treat that they can enjoy instead of the same pre-packaged cat food. How it’s important to take care with what you choose to feed your cat, to avoid causing him or her health problems. Also, treats should never be a substitute for food that is specially made for cats, only an addition to their diet. Cats need certain vitamins to help keep them healthy, this can be very hard to get in their diet without providing a complete cat food.

There are many different foods that should NEVER be fed to cats. Chocolate, coffee, tea, or any product that contains caffeine can cause damage to the heart and nervous system of a cat. Onions and garlic contain a chemical that can damage the red blood cells of the cat and eventually cause anemia. This is one to especially watch out for because many pre-packaged human foods contain onion, garlic or derivatives of either of these for flavor. Grapes, raisins and currants contain a toxin that has not been precisely identified but causes damage to the kidneys. Any food that has too much iron added can also damage the kidneys of a cat. Sugary foods are not good for a cat as they can lead to obesity and damage their teeth, but a very small amount, very occasionally will not risk anything more than an upset stomach.

Two foods that people often feed their cats are ones that need to be strictly controlled. A cat that eats too much fish or other seafood will be at risk or vitamin deficiencies. Cats need a more varied diet that one of exclusively fresh seafood can provide. Finally, while cats love milk, it can upset their stomach so should be given only in very small amounts as a treat.

Many people are becoming vegetarians not only to support animal welfare but for their health. Unfortunately some cat owners feel that Mr. Kitty should be a vegetarian. This is actually very bad for the health of the cat. Cats are obligate carnivores which means their diet is supposed to consist completely of meat. Everything about the way cats are designed supports them being the most complete predatory animal. Their teeth and tongue are designed to grip, saw and shred their prey. Their digestive system cannot convert plant material to the essential nutrients like humans and many other animals. The most important nutrients your cat cannot get from a vegetarian diet are taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, vitamin B12, niacin, thiamin, and protein. Some of these can be found in vegetables, but they are not in forms the cat’s body can convert. By feeding a cat a strictly vegetarian diet you can end up causing illness and possibly the death of your cat.

There will always be the debate about completing your cats vegetarian diet with store bought supplements and therefore your cat can be a vegetarian. It would be nice if the cat had a say in its diet, but some vegetarians do feel that forcing their cat to eat a diet based on their philosophy is the correct path to choose. In this time where more people are focusing on animal welfare, which is absolutely wonderful, there needs to be a balance in what we are doing to the animals. Some with all good intentions try to protect all species, but may end up causing harm to one in this pursuit. Life was designed a certain way and we should not be trying to turn a true carnivore into a herbivore because of our personal preference to eat as a herbivore. We have that choice and our bodies are designed in a way that can handle this decision, cats are not designed that way.
