Man and Animals: A Symbiotic Relationship

Humans and animals belong together. We love our pets and they love us. But this relationship goes beyond just having affection for each other. We are symbiotic. We help each other physically, emotionally, and socially.

Purdue University’s Center for the Human-Animal Bond has been conducting studies since 1982. Some of their findings are quite fascinating.

When people are in frequent contact with animals they experience reduced anxiety, a decrease in blood pressure and they just feel better.

As children interact and observe the behavior of their pets they often become more nurturing. Studies are still on-going but children with pets are possibly better parents when they start having their own children.

When animals have been introduced into nursing homes, hospices, prisons and even hospitals they have found a distinct therapeutic correlation. Animals sooth the patients and bring a calm to frazzled nerves or to the injured psyche.  Recovery is faster or declines are slowed. Quality of life for the patient tends to be much better.

When people are around pets those people tend to be happier. They stop and enjoy the love that flows back to them from the animal. Both people and animals are social beings. We thrive best when we have interaction between other beings. Whether that interaction is between two people or a person and a pet does not appear to make a difference.

There have been extensive studies about the benefits of humans having pets. We know we are better off. Studies are just beginning to determine how the human interaction is beneficial to the animals. These studies are looking at not just domesticated animals but they are also looking at how wildlife and humans interact. These studies will be interesting to see how different species will show benefits or detriment from their human interactions.

Man and animals are on this earth together and we are finding that we are truly symbiotic. Mankind is happier when they interact with animals and animals are happier and live longer when they live with and interact with mankind.

Tips on Training Your Dog

Failing to train your dog or to teach him or her right and wrong can have serious consequences. If you’ve ever had the wood finish scratched on your poker tables due to this problem, it becomes clear that training should take place. Here are some tips to help with the training process on your dog.

You should seriously consider ways to learn training techniques for your dog. Many popular pet stores have pet training classes that could be a valuable way to learn these things. Not only will it give you a strong foundation in techniques, but it can help you become a better master of your pet – in order to teach him or her what is right and wrong.

As you learn techniques to help your dog with his or her mental and emotional health, be sure to stay firm in your practices. It is never a good idea to “give in” and break the consistency of a certain training method, unless the technique itself calls for such measures.

Don’t resort to other measures. While it can be easy to imagine the consequences of resorting to less effective measures, it can happen to anyone in the heat of the moment. As difficult and tough it may be, don’t ignore your methods of training a dog. It is unfortunate to see owners who start with a method to be chasing their dog moments later.

Stick to commands that can help your dog remain obedient. Once your dog learns to sit, lay down, and come, he or she will hopefully be better at listening to you. You can extend this to areas of the house in which your dog will be aware of, such as your nice poker tables, certainly.

Take some time to address options to learn how to train your dog – it will be worth it in the end.

Responsibly Breeding Your Pets

Breeding your pets can be very easy. If a male and a female are around each other they, most likely, will breed.  It really is that simple. However, this laissez-faire attitude also causes thousands of animals to be put to sleep every day at humane societies all over the world.

If you decide that you do not want to responsibly breed your pets then please have them spayed or neutered and thereby save their offspring from living horrible lives or being killed early either humanly or otherwise.

Responsible breeding has four basic points.

First, acquire your animal from an established and reliable breeding source. Raise genetically healthy animals with good bloodlines.  This will allow life to animals that are free from common genetic defects and will allow their young to also be healthy and happy.

Second, as you breed animals,  do so primarily for healthy, even tempered and intelligent pets. You can breed for color and markings but these should be secondary to the health and happiness of the animal.

Third, a responsible breeder will only breed as many animals as they can handle themselves or they can find homes for. Often they will talk to others and breed only when they know they have a home ready for the animals. The adoptive family can then watch the mother progress through her pregnancy and birth. They can then enjoy the babies knowing they were wanted from the beginning.

Fourth, if the adoptive family does not work out the responsible breeder will take back the, now unwanted, animals. Recognize that not everyone can have pets in the home. When the adoptive family realizes that their children or mom or dad are allergic to the animal, the poor innocent animal must leave the home. This is hard on all involved but knowing that the animal went to a good home lets the children know the pet was lovingly moved to a new home.

And fifth, they will also make sure that the adoptive family is taught how to responsibly breed or ensure that the animal is properly spayed or neutered.

Don’t Let Your Best Friend Go Undressed!

Pets are definitely a part of the modern family! When you choose a new outfit or a costume for a special occasion, don’t let your best friend feel left out. These days, pets of all types and sizes can be just as fashionable as their owner. If you’re interested in creating a wardrobe for your pet, try one of these ideas for pet costumes:

Dress for the Occasion

If you’re dressing up for a wedding or a party, select a tuxedo or lacy dress for your little friend. While this usually works best for dogs, cats and other pets have been seen fashionably attired at various venues. Your pet’s clothing doesn’t have to be formal! Dress them up rocker-style or as a cute little ladybug depending on the occasion. Going to the beach? Try a floppy hat or some cool sunglasses.

Holiday Outfits

One of the best opportunities to try out a few pet costumes is a major holiday. For Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, even normal retail stores stock a few pet-friendly costumes. Of course, you can order more elaborate costumes from online sites. Whether your pooch likes to look like a devil, a turkey, or Santa Claus, he’ll enjoy the holiday much more when everyone is fussing over how cute he is! Don’t forget to take a few pictures; pet postcards make great greeting cards for these holidays. They’re much more interesting than a standard item.

Everyday Style

Once you and your pet get into this new trend of costuming together, you don’t have to wait for a special day to try on a few new duds. Pet clothing is available in everything from raincoats to pajamas! You can even buy a pair or two of doggie shoes for your furry little friend.

Don’t leave your pup out in the cold on your next shopping spree! Dress your pet up to attract the attention he or she craves!

Love Your Pet: Feed Him Right

Animals are fun to have in the home. They give you lots of love and attention, even cats (they just do it in their own way). Just like you your pet loves to eat. Eating is a natural part of all of our lives and we need to feed our animals correctly just as we need to eat healthy.

You will want to check with your veterinarian for their suggestions. Each animal is different, size, temperament, breed, our pets have far more variety than we humans. Your vet will be able to better understand these differences for your pet than the instructions on the side of the pet food package.

Measuring the food each time as you feed your animal will also allow uniform feeding. Especially if two or more of you are feeding them. A bowl full of food can mean two different things to two different people. Different bowls can also hold radically different amounts of food in them. Using a measuring cup will make all these differences irrelevant.

All animals should have normal mealtimes. You can ensure that they are getting the food that they need and not over eat. Often animals will over eat when they are bored. This will result in fat cats, dogs, hamsters, etc. They will live longer and be happier if they are at the proper weight.

Table scraps are horrible for pets to eat. They often love to eat what you are eating but your nutritional needs are different. Table fed animals are often fatter and less perky than animals that are following a diet built for them.

As you work with your animal and want to reward them, remember that there are several ways to reward their good behavior. Treats work well but should not be their only reward. Giving them love and attention goes a lot further than just a treat. They love to spend time with you, which is a great reward in and of itself.

Show your pets that you love them by properly feeding and caring for them. They will reward you affectionately for many years.

Aggressive Breeds Of Dogs As Pets

Dogs are the most popular pets in the world and are parts of a large percentage of households around the world. The bond between man and dog is a unique one in the whole of the animal kingdom. Dogs offer unwavering loyalty to their human masters and the owners also tend to get extremely attached to their dogs. Being one of the first domesticated animals, humans and dogs have been together for millennia. From the time man started settling down and building civilizations, dogs have been by their side. This trend continues even now when many of the uses of dogs no longer exist. Mankind is no longer as dependant on dogs as before but still their popularity never wanes.

There are many types of dogs people keep as pets nowadays, from small Pugs to huge Saint Bernard. However special care is needed while keeping dogs which have been declared as aggressive breeds. Rottweiler, German shepherd, Doberman all have been declared as aggressive breeds of dogs. These dogs have powerful jaws and great bite power. Also they tend to be aggressive towards strangers as they are usually territorial and extremely protective of their masters.

Still, many choose to keep these breeds as pets. These breeds are seldom dangerous to its owners. The problem usually comes when the dog comes in contact with outsiders by mistake. A guest who plucks a rose from your garden may be subjected to the fury of your dog which tends to take guard duty very seriously. Hence the first thing to understand is that even though your dog is adorable and cuddly to you, it will be completely different to an outsider. Hence you should try not to bring the dog in contact with outsiders unless it has been trained to be social since it was a puppy.

Benefits Of Having A Pet

The domestication of the dog is supposed to be one of the turning points in human civilization. Since that time mankind has domesticated many animals for various purposes. For food, milk, transportation, etc. However as society progressed and technology developed, many of the once major uses of domesticated animals such as transportation and security have lost its significance. Yet people started keeping animals for no real reason other than the joy of their companionship. That is how the whole concept of keeping pets started. In modern times, even though dogs are still used as guard dogs and by the police force and all, the main use of a dog is now as a pet. So what is it about keeping a pet that is so great?

Science has shown that keeping a pet is not simply an idle pastime and that it has actual health benefits to the owner. The simple act of raising an animal and caring for it provides a lot of joy to the person doing it. Even though companionship is something that you can also get from friends and family, only a pet can give the kind of self less love which does not have the usual drama of human relationships. An animal like a dog is loyal to the point of devotion and never wavers in its love for its master. This sort of assured companionship is something only animals can provide. Dogs especially have been noted for their faithfulness. The term ‘man’s best friend’ is not used idly. There have been instances of dogs showing immense faithfulness to their owners and even rescuing them at times of need. Amid the pressures of modern life, pets can be great stress relievers. The health benefits of keeping pets have been particularly noted for ailing patients and senior citizens.

How To Tackle Aggressive Breeds Of Pets

There are many animals which could form a pet in a household. They could be common pets such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and uncommon pets such as snakes, turtles and even lions and tigers. Of all the above animals, dogs and cats are the most of common of all pets, which are widely reared and grown in households. Dogs by nature are docile and very obedient.

They are extremely faithful to their owners and very rarely do they disagree or disobey their masters. However, there are instances when dogs have known to earn the notorious name of aggressive animals. Before branding them as villains and giving them adjectives, it would be better if we look inwards and try to find out if there is a problem in the way we tackle their health problems and general care which makes them turn aggressive.

Dogs are equipped with powerful jaws and teeth which can be highly dangerous and can cause serious damage when they turn aggressive. But they do not become aggressive very often unless they are provoked. What provokes them is something which as owners and masters we should find out. When a dog is in the breeding season quite often they tend to be aggressive. Again some species of dogs are by nature aggressive.

Some food habits may also provide them to become aggressive. Some dogs are territorial in nature and they exhibit signs of aggression to protect their territory. Others need company of their own kind and when they are denied this basic right, they express their displeasure by turning it on their masters. The first signs of a rabid infection in a dog is unwarranted aggression and this vital sign should not be ignored if the pet has to survive and also if the people surrounding it are to remain safe. So, aggression is not a natural reason for dogs and hence the main reason should be identified and remedied.

General Care Of Pets

Pets are one of the best companions of human beings because they agree with whatever we say. They are easy to train, easy to manage and above all they return love with love most of the times. However, even for pets there are some general do and don’t which we should adhere to if we are to keep them away from health problems and other related complications.

However pet rearing and pet breeding could be a full time job and any laxity of carelessness could spell disaster for the pet. Grooming the pet, training them, taking them on regular walks, doing rounds to the veterinary doctors regularly and above all showering love and affection on them are some of the tasks which must be done without tiredness or fatigue. Coming to some general things that must be taken care of, giving the pet the right kind of food is very important.

Some species of pets demand special food which must be understood and acted upon. Pets also need vitamin supplements, tonics, and other medicines which must be well stocked up to avoid rushing for the same in case of need. There are other statutory requirements such as licenses for the pets which should be in place and should be validated time and again. ID tag is another thing which must also be in place.

Pets are also normal living things and their need for company should be understood and respected or else we could run the risk of having aggressive breeds in our house which actually they are not. Pets tend to fall sick often if they are not taken proper care and if they fall sick it is important that they are taken to a doctor for treatment. In places where there are wild fluctuations in climate, the living conditions of pets also need to be understood and they should be provided with the right kind of shelter and clothing.

How To Tackle Health Problems In Pets?

Owning a pet is just the beginning. It calls for a lot of patience, hard work, love and care to keep the pet in good condition. There are a lot of general care rules and regulations that need to be gone through to keep pets in good health, especially when they are in the breeding season. It would do a great service to the pet owner and also the pet if people are aware of some common symptoms which point towards some health problems in pets.

These symptoms could include abnormal discharges, not eating properly or eating which is much reduced, behavior which is abnormal and at times very aggressive even though they are not aggressive breeds. Immediately on the notice of such symptoms it would be advisable to take the pet to a good veterinarian and put it on some treatment regimen after diagnosing the cause of their abnormal behavior or other manifestations.

Some species of pets fall sick and develop health challenges if the environment and surroundings are not to their liking. For example, some pets which thrive in the most severe winters are definitely bound to fall sick if they are reared as pets in tropical climates. So a pet should be grown in a climate where it is comfortable. Pets need constant dental care. Dogs are very prone to dental illnesses. Constant care and vigil should be exercised to remove excess buildup of tartar to prevent diseases such as gingivitis, etc., from creeping in.

Some common symptoms of dental illness are swelling of the gums, bleeding and foul smell. Such symptoms should not be ignored. Feeding habits could also cause dental problems which should be kept in mind. Chocolate, candies and sweet items are excellent recipes for the pets’ dental health and should be kept out. Hence keeping a pet in good health is easier said than done.
